15 October 2015 marked the 75th anniversary of President Lluís Companys’ execution by Franco’s regime and 20 November 2015 was the 40th anniversary of the dictator’s death. Faced with these highly symbolic milestones related to historical memory in Catalonia, Òmnium created the project “Justice for the Crimes of Franco’s regime”.

Unlike what other countries in Europe and the world have done regarding dictatorial regimes, the Spanish central government has never condemned Francoism and the members of Franco’s government have never been tried. Indeed, sentences handed down during Franco’s government remain in force and policies to support its victims have been too little, too late.
