Òmnium Cultural demands that Spain immediately free its president, Jordi Cuixart, and the rest of Catalan political prisoners. This comes after the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention of the United Nations released a report asking for the release of the prisoners which even goes as far as to state that Spain should financially compensate them for having deprived them of freedom before a sentence is even issued. “By denouncing our arbitrary incarceration the UN denounces that Spain is violating fundamental rights. It is an international democratic shame”, President Cuixart said in a tweet.

The vice president of Òmnium, Marcel Mauri, has reminded the Spanish government that “it is obliged” to heed the resolution of the Working Group: “it cannot do anything else”. “If they ignore it, we would be entering a scenario of massive discredit of Spain and we would be forced to act”. In a statement before the press, Mauri has recalled that “all democratic countries, as it is stated in article 10 of the Spanish constitution, are obliged to follow United Nations resolutions because they are signatories of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights”. “These resolutions are not at all common with regards to democratic countries. If Spain wants to be on the side of human rights all it can do is abide by this ruling”, he sentenced.
