A la trobada hi han participat l’Alta Comissionada pels DDHH de l’ONU, Michelle Bachelet; i el Ministre d’Exteriors d’Irlanda, Simon Coveney

Jordi Cuixart, president d’Òmnium Cultural, s’ha fet sentir a Dublín (Irlanda) a la trobada internacional de defensors de drets humans més important del món: la Plataforma Dublín 2019 de Defensors de Drets Humans en Risc. Mitjançant la lectura d’una carta, Cuixart ha explicat el seu cas als assistents i ha alertat que “el fet que l’Estat espanyol faci servir els tribunals i el codi penal per debilitar els drets humans és una molt mala notícia per Europa i pel món”.

Davant del públic assistent a la trobada Plataforma Dublín 2019, Elena Jiménez, membre de la junta d’Òmnium Cultural, ha llegit la carta de Jordi Cuixart on el president de l’entitat ha explicat que “he estat empresonat des de l’octubre de 2017, acusat de sedició i rebel·lió, delictes que segons el Codi Penal espanyol requereixen haver fet ús de la violència per derrocar l’estat, quelcom que no es va produir”. Cuixart ha denunciat que “el meu crim va ser liderar una manifestació fent ús de la seva llibertat d’expressió i dret de protesta per defensar un referèndum d’autodeterminació”.

El president d’Òmnium ha posat èmfasi en el fet que Pedro Sánchez, president del govern espanyol, està ignorant l’informe del grup de treball sobre detencions arbitràries de l’ONU en el qual es demana la seva llibertat immediata i una indemnització pels dos anys de presó preventiva. Cuixart també ha citat les crides fetes per ONGs internacionals com Amnistia Internacional, l’Organització Mundial Contra la Tortura i Front Line Defenders.

Què és la Plataforma Dublín per a defensors de Drets Humans?

Creada el 2010, és un esdeveniment bianual organitzat per Front Line Defenders que ofereix l’oportunitat de reunir els defensors de drets humans d’arreu del món. Durant tres dies al Castell de Dublin, els defensors de DDHH d’arreu del món comparteixen estratègies d’incidència i protecció, construeixen solidaritat amb companys d’arreu del món i es relaciona amb stakeholders i organismes governamentals i intergovernamentals.

En la trobada d’enguany, a més de les principals ONGs de Drets Humans d’arreu del món, també es compta amb la presència de representants d’organismes internacionals com l’Alta Comissionada per als Drets Humans de l’ONU, Michelle Bachelet; el relator especial de Nacions Unides per als Defensors dels DDHH, Michel Forst, el representant especial de la UE sobre Drets Humans, Eamon Gilmore; i el Ministre d’Exteriors d’Irlanda, Simon Coveney.

Front Line Defenders ja ha reconegut Jordi Cuixart com a defensor de DDHH

És l’ONG més prestigiosa respecte als defensors de drets humans. Treballa en l’àmbit del Consell d’Europa, Nacions Unides i porta el programa de defensors de drets humans de la UE. Aquesta organització ha ha denunciat públicament la situació de Jordi Cuixart i l’ha reconegut com a defensor de drets humans.

Dear Human Rights Defenders,

I have been incarcerated since October 2017,  charged with sedition and rebellion, crimes which under Spain’s law require having committed violence with a view to overthrowing the state, which obviously never occurred. Nonetheless in the coming weeks  I face a sentence of up to 17 years in prison for my “crime”, which was leading a peaceful demonstration using my right to free speech and freedom of assembly to defend Catalonia’s self-determination referendum on 1 October 2017.

I speak as the president of Òmnium Cultural (Culture For Everybody). I’m one of the nine of political prisoners in this political vendetta trial. In my case and that of my colleague Jordi Sànchez, also a civil society leader, Spain is calling for a sentence of 17 years. Both the Spanish government, headed by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and the highly politicized judiciary are ignoring the opinion of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which o stated that our detention is arbitrary and called for our immediate release. They have also ignored numerous calls for our release and the dropping of charges from groups such as Amnesty International, the World Organisation Against Torture and Front Line Defenders.

The fact that Spain is using the courts and criminal law to undermine basic human rights it is very bad news for Europe as a whole, and for the world. But whatever happens, we will once again exercise the human rights that they condemn.

I am the proud father of four children, one of them a beautiful baby born just a week ago today. But my priority is no longer to get out of prison, but to seek a democratic solution to the political conflict between Catalonia and Spain, through sincere dialogue and negotiation, as Scotland with the United Kingdom and Quebec with Canada have done.

Non-violent action, and as a last resort civil disobedience, are today essential tools for democratic change to build a better world. This has recently been shown by Carola Rackete and Oscar Camps on the European coasts, heeding the call for humanitarian conscience by saving refugees.

715 nights in prison have only strengthened my commitment to human rights: within these walls I have become increasingly aware of the dire situation we are seeing all over the world. The abuse of human rights has stolen lives and futures from hundreds of thousands of people and the humanitarian challenges are enormous: the climate crisis, inequality, indifference to refugees fleeing famine or war and the persecution of political dissidence affect all our struggles. This conference is a source of hope and at the same time of inescapable responsibility.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to offer my most sincere thanks to the organisations defending human rights for their essential daily work, as well as for their support for our freedom, and in particular to Front Line Defenders for allowing us to share our testimony today.
